Political Leaders Respond To Syria Airstrikes

Washington, D.C. The United States and its European allies launched precision air strikes in Syria Saturday morning.

The mission was in retaliation for last Saturday’s suspected chemical attack that killed dozens of Syrian civilians, including children.

Political leaders responded to the attacks on Syria.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted that it’s Congress’s job to make war, not the president’s.

“The international community must uphold the prohibition against the use of chemical weapons, but it is unclear how Trump’s illegal and unauthorized strikes on Syria achieve that goal,” Sanders wrote.

New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen tweeted out her own statement.

“The Assad regime’s brutality cannot go unanswered,” Shaheen wrote.

She said she supports the attack. but thinks the Trump administration should come up with a “comprehensive” plan to address the issues in Syria.

New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik released a statement, saying she supports President Trump’s decision.

“This kind of brutality cannot stand,” she said.

Stefanik said she’ll work with her colleagues on the House Armed Services Committee to oversee U.S. strategies.

This is the second time President Trump has ordered retaliatory air strikes in Syria.

Last year, the U-S launched cruise missiles after President Assad used sarin gas on civilians.

Saturday’s strike was double the size of last year’s assault.
