Wisconsin Pair May Have Thought Hemp They Stole From Farm Was Marijuana, Police Say

The suspects were identified as Barbara Vant Hoff, age 59, and Gregory Vant Hoff, age 64, of Beaver Dam Wisconsin.

On September 12th, 2020, a land owner in the Town of Springvale contacted the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office after interrupting a theft of his legally grown and licensed industrial hemp plants.
The landowner was able to obtain a license plate for the vehicle the suspects were operating.
The landowner advised that it was believed these same suspects had stolen hemp from the land on a previous occasion as well.
The landowner believed hemp flower from approximately a dozen hemp plants had been taken.
With the assistance of the Beaver Dam Police Department, a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Detective was able to make contact with the suspects on September 17th in the City of Beaver Dam.
The suspects admitted to stealing the hemp flower on two occasions, believing that the plants were illegal marijuana plants. The suspects allowed investigators to recover approximately 10 pounds of stolen hemp flower.
The approximate value of the hemp flower is $1,000.
Both were taken into custody by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of the Beaver Dam Police Department. They are currently at the Columbia County Jail awaiting a court appearance.
The following charges are being referred to the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office:
• Misdemeanor- Theft, 2 counts
• Felony- Criminal damage to property, 2 counts
• Trespass to land, 2 counts
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office would like to offer a reminder that industrial hemp plants are grown legally throughout Columbia County.
The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection administers the industrial hemp program in the State of Wisconsin. Industrial hemp plants have many uses and are commonly grown to produce CBD products.
