THE NEW MEYTAL ALBUM

Exactly 3,173 of you supported the creation of my debut album ALCHEMY, you guys made it possible then, and I’m here to ask for your support once again so I can create this next album, and  embark on the next chapter in this indefinable yet magical career path of mine, together with you!

When I told you guys I wanted to create my debut album, you totally supported the idea, even though you had very little clue if I’ll be able to deliver a full length original album as most of you have just known me as the girl that plays drum covers. but thanks to your support I wasn’t ONLY able to CREATE the album, but you made it CHART on the Billboards, right along side some of the bands that have inspired me to start playing in the first place. SURREAL.

Many of you know my story but if you just happened to stumble upon this page here’s a short recap! My name is Meytal Cohen. Pretty common Israeli name that also just happensto sound like my favorite style of music. coincidence? I think not! I’m the youngest of 7. I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers. My dad died when I was 7 years old, when a drunk driver crashed while he was standing on the sidewalk. My mom successfully raised us all by herself.

I started playing drums at 18 years old, despite the conventional ‘you’re making noise, you’re wasting time, you’re spending money, and this will never mount to anything’ sorta attitude I was getting at home. That same year, I graduated from high school and was drafted to the Israeli Defense Force (it’s mandatory), I served my country for 2 years and was released from the IDF.

At age 21 I moved to Los Angeles to attended the LA Music Academy, and while in school I managed to break my back in a car accident. I broke three vertebras, and had to wear a back brace for 6 months. I returned to Israel for the healing process, and within a year came back to LA and later on graduated.

After school, it wasn’t easy, like it never really is for a musician trying to make a living at it. In 2009, me and a few friends shot an audition tape for ‘America’s Got Talent’ of a metal violin cover of System Of A Down’s “Toxicity”. The show didn’t think much of us, but the video quickly became a viral hit gaining 3 MILLION views in just a couple of months. After seeing the response to our toxicity video, I decided I was going to shoot 100 drum covers of my favorite songs and see what happens next – I now have over 200,000,000 views, 1,200,000 subscribers on YouTube, and 1,500,000 likes on Facebook. UNREAL.

Learning note for note covers of my favorite songs was (and still is) the best music school I could have ever asked for, but it wasn’t the reason why I became a musician. and so in 2013 I felt it was time for me to STEP OUTSIDE my video making comfort zone, and try and create my first ever original album. I went to Kickstarter and asked my fans to help me raise $60k so that I can create this album. The response was incredible and you guys ended up pledging over $140k towards the album.

When the album was ready, I was searching for the best way to release it. I wanted to make sure I’ll be able to record more albums, go on the road, have legit music videos, and really just use this album to launch a successful recording/touring career. Finding a record label with resources, connections and experience seemed to make the most sense.

A few known labels started showing interest in the project, and the possibility of signing with one label in particular seemed very exciting. There were talks of putting us on a huge festival tour and for once it seemed like someone else was gonna do the heavy lifting – almost seemed too good to be true. Well, turned out it actually was too good to be true. Long story short, signing this deal would have meant that all the work and effort I put into my career, and this project, would be owned by the label – not exactly what I had in mind.

We live in a time where no compromises need to be made, and we have all the tools as artists to make it happen ourselves. Using platforms like Kickstarter to gain the support of our people to make it possible and keep making it possible. sure it might be compelling to let someone bigger and wiser steer the ship, but at what price?

None of the labels I met with truly believed I’ll be able to cross over from shooting covers to producing original music.. and more than that they didn’t think any of you would care. well turns out that not accepting their offer was the best decision I ever made, cause you guys DID care, and YOU made it BLOW UP!

For years I was looking for the right label deal, till it dawned on me – I already have the best label an artist can ask for – YOU!

Out of Chaos is the first song of the yet to be present album – it marks the beginning of a new understanding and a whole new approach to writing, free of expectations or industry guidelines of what it should or should not be and the first step in this yet to be written chapter in the MEYTAL saga.
