The founding board of directors of NPR consisted of six members elected by region: Joe Gwathmey, Texas Bill Kling, Minnesota, Karl Schmidt, Wisconsin, David Platts, Florida John Witherspoon, California, Bill Siemering. New York.

We in turn elected three additional members: Richard Estell, WKAR, Michigan, Bernard Mayes, KQED San Francisco, and Marvin Segelman, KPFA Los Angeles.

The board laid the foundation for NPR and elected the first president, Don Quayle. Al Hulsen was the CPB director of radio activities, who played a vital role in getting NPR and the public radio system started. There were initially 72 CPB qualified stations.

Thanks to Nicolette Khan at NPR for retrieving the minutes of the first board meeting.
