It’s been 20 years since Joel and Ethan Coen’s wild ride through the seamier side of Los Angeles hit screens. Since its release in 1998, it’s become so much more than just a movie, it’s become a cultural phenomenon.
The Big Lebowski has proved so indelible that in 2014 it was entered into the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry. Now it’s back on the big screen as part of the TCM Big Screen Classics series from Fathom Events.
On Sunday, August 5, 2018, and Wednesday, August 8, 2018, it’ll be time for fans across the United States to pull out and put on their bathrobes, grab a White Russian and head back to movie theaters and witness, again, The Dude and his idiosyncratic cohorts in one of the greatest mystery-comedies of all time.
Inspired loosely by the noir writing of Raymond Chandler, The Big Lebowski stars Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tara Reid and David Huddleston in a modern classic. That said, it received mixed reviews on its initial release and, made for $15 million, it only managed to gross $46.19 million at the worldwide box office.
While the Coen brothers have stated publicly that they will never make a sequel to The Big Lebowski, a spin-off based on John Turturro’s character, Jesus Quintana, was filmed in 2017. Entitled Going Places, it not only starred but was also written and directed by Turturro. It’s not yet been released.
