Possible Westminster-Style Attack Thwarted in Belgium

A possible Westminster-style Islamic terror attack was prevented in Antwerp, Belgium on Thursday.

“At about 11 a.m. this morning a vehicle entered De Meir [street] at high speed due to which pedestrians had to jump away,” a police spokesman said during a press conference.

Police were able to stop the vehicle and apprehend the suspect who, according to police, was of North African descent and was wearing military fatigues.

While the man’s motives have not been confirmed, the police spokesman did confirm that Belgian anti-terror authorities were investigating the incident.

French President Francois Hollande called the incident “an attempted terrorist attack” in a statement after authorities identified the attacker as 39 year-old French resident Mohamed R.

Authorities searched the vehicle and recovered weapons and other as-of-yet unidentified “illegal materials.”

“My gratitude on behalf of all Antwerp to the soldiers who have intervened, the police services and the special intervention force,” tweeted Antwerp mayor Bart de Wever.

“We remain vigilant,” Prime Minister Charles Michel. “Our security services have done excellent work.”
