One officer died and another was wounded in a shooting Friday during a standoff with a person barricaded inside a home in Pomona, according to the Pomona Police Department Chief Michael Olivieri.
Officials received a call of the barricade at approximately 9:10 p.m in the 1400 block of South Palomares Street. About an hour later, the first officer was wounded after multiple shots were fired.
Both officers were transported to a local hospital, where one of them died.
The incident began with a short pursuit after officers received a reckless vehicle call, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detective Christopher Bergner said at a Saturday morning news conference. The suspect left the vehicle and ran into a nearby apartment complex, with officers giving chase, Bergner said.
The suspect hid inside a bedroom and shot through a door as the officers tried to make contact, he said.
Bergner did not identify the slain officer nor the wounded officer, but did say they were both male. The surviving officer remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Officers escorted the fallen officer to the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office at a Saturday morning procession.
The suspect remains barricaded inside the apartment building.
