Attorney General Jeff Sessions is not a fan of marijuana, and he’s received a lot of ire from the pro-cannabis crowd as a result. But according to Sessions, that’s only because they’re not well-informed.
Sessions held a drug policy roundtable at the Department of Justice recently and invited the media to record some of the discussions. The Attorney General, unsurprisingly, said marijuana is “not a healthy substance.” He then later said he doesn’t believe the public is well-informed about cannabis and said that educating people is an important step in enacting a rational drug policy.
Of course, we could retort that it’s actually Jeff Sessions and the federal government who are not well-informed about marijuana, or simply ignoring much of the information we do know about cannabis. The Trump administration has ignored studies showing medical marijuana reduces opioid abuse in states where it’s legal, and many of Sessions’ most inflammatory comments about cannabis have been proven false.
So far Sessions and the Trump administration have done very little to change or interfere with marijuana laws passed by various states. But given the Attorney General’s comments, it’s not that they don’t want to.
Hard to believe given how many members of the Trump administration have quit or been fired that Sessions remains in his position. Hopefully Congress continues to keep him on a leash when it comes to marijuana.
