In Front Of Facebook’s Headquarters, Hundreds Of Nipples Against Censorship Of Nudity

Photographer Spencer Tunick has invited his army of nude models to protest against censorship of nudity on Instagram and Facebook, in front of the latter’s headquarters in New York on Sunday.

It’s well known, Facebook and Instagram have a problem with nipples. If those of men are allowed, those of the women on the other hand are systematically censured by the two social networks. To protest this censorship, photographer Spencer Tunick has invited almost 100 models to pose naked in front of the headquarters of Mark Zuckerberg’s company in New York this Sunday.

Of course, this American has thought of everything so that his cliché can be shared without a hitch on the social networks concerned. Extended on the road, the models all hold and a large photo of male nipples in the air, another covering their genitals. Women have stickers stuck on their nipples. So there is no reason for Facebook or Instagram to censor this video, says the photographer on social networks.

Entitled WeTheNipple, this event was organized in collaboration with the National Coalition Against Censorship. ”  The ban on nudity prevents many artists from sharing their work online. This is particularly damaging to artists whose work is centered on their own bodies, including queer and non-gendered artists, as well as the bodies of those who belong to their communities, “ says the Coalition on its website, before calling Facebook. and Instagram to “create an exception to their nudity restrictions” to allow photographers to publish their art.

The social networks, guilty of having censured the origin of the world of Gustave Courbet, take radical measures. On Instagram, nudity is not allowed, with a few exceptions. “Photos, videos and some digitally generated content showing sex, genitals and close-ups of completely naked buttocks” are forbidden. ”  It’s also about pictures of female nipples, but pictures of post-mastectomy scars and active breastfeeding are allowed,” says Instagram policy.

According to CNN , Facebook ”  limits the display of nudity or sexual activity” because ”  some people in our community may be sensitive to this type of content.”

Controversial artist

Spencer Tunick is not at his first attempt. Since the early 90’s, he has photographed mass nudity in public spaces around the world. Without ever falling into eroticism. A political artist, this American has been arrested several times and has been the subject of a major clash between the United States Supreme Court and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who denied him the right to take nudes in the city. With over a hundred similar projects under his belt, Spencer Tunick is trying to liberalize our attitude towards nudity.
