Donald Trump Condemns Attack on Egyptian Mosque That Killed More Than 230

At least 235 people are dead and more than 100 injured after attackers detonated two bombs and opened fire on a Sufi mosque in Egypt’s North Sinai region on Friday, according to multiple reports.

Militants reportedly set off explosives and rained down gunfire on worshipers at the crowded mosque in the Sinai Peninsula in what is being called the deadliest attack on Egyptian civilians by Islamic extremists, according to CNN.

“Horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent defenseless worshipers in Egypt,” Donald Trump tweeted of the news. “The world cannot tolerate terrorism, we must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence!”

Witnesses said that the attackers arrived in off-road vehicles and bombed the mosque before opening fire on the worshipers, the BBC reports. They also reportedly set parked vehicles on fire to block off the area around the mosque.

“They were shooting at people as they left the mosque,” one witness reportedly told Reuters, according to the BBC. “They were shooting at the ambulances too.”

“Such an evil and cowardly terrorist attack on worshipers in Egypt. Our condolences & prayers are with the victims & their families,” Vice President Mike Pence tweeted. “Our strength & resolve will overpower their extremist ideology. We cannot & will not allow terrorists to win.”

According to CNN, the gunmen set up ambush locations and continued to fire as wounded worshipers were taken from the mosque, witnesses said. Egyptian health ministry spokesman Khalid Mujahid described the incident as a “terrorist attack.”

However, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, CNN reports.
