Feb. 23 (UPI) — LeBron James could soon have his depth playmaker.

The Dallas Mavericks and Cleveland Cavaliers were reportedly discussing a Deron Williams trade before Thursday’s deadline, but nothing materialized. The Mavericks then decided to waive the three-time All-Star.

Now the Cavaliers are trying to sign the former lottery pick and 12-year veteran, according to multiple sources. The Utah Jazz and Atlanta Hawks were also interested in trading for the point guard, according to Shams Charania. James played on Team USA with Williams.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Mavericks told Williams it would pay the full remaining amount on his deal if he wanted to be a free agent.

The Vertical reported earlier this month that the Mavericks will give rookie Yogi Ferrell a two-year contract, following his first 10-day pact with the franchise. Ferrell looks to take over the Mavericks’ point guard duties.

Stein reported that multiple teams interested in Williams told ESPN that he has “already decided to join Cleveland upon clearing waivers.”

James has said several times this season that the “top heavy” Cavaliers need another playmaker.

Williams signed a one-year, $9 million contract in July with the Mavericks. The two-time All-NBA selection was averaging 13.1 points and 6.9 assists through 40 games this season.
