Ivanka Gets Long-Awaited Trademarks Approved Within Hours of Dining with Chinese President
Ivanka Trump has found yet another way to financially benefit from being the first daughter/wife of a sitting US president.
Ivanka’s brand of jewelry, clothing and other accessories have been given new trademarks from the government of China. The ironic part about this corporate “gift” is that it was received the same day she and her husband Jared Kushner, senior adviser to the president, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In fact Ivanka had her new trademarks within 6 hours of having dinner with Jimping at Mar-a-Lago over the Easter weekend for “branded bags, spa services and jewelry”.
Journalists Erika Kinetz and Anne D’Innocenzio put it this way: “The commercial currents of the Trump White House are unprecedented in modern American politics. They have created an unfamiliar landscape riven with ethical pitfalls, and forced consumers and retailers to wrestle with the unlikely passions now inspired by Ivanka Trump’s midmarket collection of ruffled blouses, shifts and wedges.”
And while “using the prestige of government service to build a brand is not illegal”, it lends to the obvious point that the Trump family is using their position to profit.
The president has also received the gift of trademark from the president of China as dozens of copyrights were approved for Donald Trump after he took office. Incredibly before Trump became the 45th US president, he tried unsuccessfully for several decades to gain control over trademark in China.
The notion that Ivanka was “just going to be a daughter” was shattered last month when she officially joined her father’s presidential as “assistant to the president”, complete with a “West Wing office, government issued communications devices and security clearance access to classified information.”
That move was financially beneficial. Journalist Rachel Abrams points out that while Ivanka “handed over day-to-day control of her company to her top executive, Abigail Klem, and transferred its assets to a new trust overseen by relatives of her husband”, the particulars of this agreement “have not been disclosed” which causes concerns over how much control Ivanka still has “over the brand that bears her name”.
Based on information provided by Ivanka’s attorney, she is “the sole beneficiary” of a trust she set up called the Ivanka M. Trump Business Trust.
In addition, Ivanka “will no longer appear in advertisements” for her company, and has “separated her business and personal social media accounts.”
And while this sounds like a clean break, Ivanka will continue to “receive regular financial reports on her company” and her husband, Jared Kushner, and her sister-in-law were both named as trustees so there is no separation of Ivanka from her company.
