Democratic Interns Respond To Paul Ryan With Their Own Selfie

In the face of the blinding whiteness of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan’s selfie with a crop of Capitol Hill interns, a group of Democratic interns stopped shielding their eyes long enough to take their own photos. And well, they pretty much speak for themselves.

Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) posted the series of photos on Facebook and Twitter, thanking summer interns Audra Jackson, Omar Al-Hendy, and Erik Daniels for making it happen.

Ryan (R-WI) posted the original selfie four days ago with the caption “I think this sets a record for the most number of #CapitolHill interns in a single selfie. #SpeakerSelfie.” Most of the 8,000+ comments had to do with the disarming homogeneity and sparked hashtags #InternsSoWhite and #GOPSoWhite.

Democrats, meanwhile, set out to prove the opposite. “Interns from Democratic Congressional offices wanted to show America how diverse the future of our party is,” Johnson wrote.
