Ask the Newton City Council to welcome immigrants and protect their rights

As a Newton resident I am writing to ask you to support the Welcoming City ordinance, Docket #443-16(2). Although there is a competing measure, this ordinance is the only proposal that will actually protect our community.

The Welcoming City ordinance supports the constitutional rights of our cities’ residents, without compromising public safety. The ordinance supports local law enforcement’s coordination with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents when the rules of due process are followed, shows probable cause or produces a warrant from the court, thus respecting the Bill of Rights and the U.S. and Massachusetts constitutions. And it protects our neighbors from unconstitutional detention and deportation while maintaining the good, long-standing relationship between police and our communities. When residents trust law enforcement because they do not fear reporting crime or other irregularities, we are all safer.

Newton needs to strengthen our local government and our police by refusing to be used as tools of federal immigration agents trying to implement an unconstitutional immigration deportation program. We must protect our city from potential liability for violating residents’ rights on behalf of the federal government. And we must stand up and say NO to the Trump administration’s racist and prejudiced policies.

Please vote for and help implement the Welcoming City ordinance, Docket #443-16(2), so that the official policies and laws in Newton match up with our community ideals.
